Congo Squeaker

Synodontis clarias is among the most widely distributed and commonly encountered Synodontis in the aquarium trade, combining a classic pale body with scattered dark spots, strong constitution and easygoing temperament. Its wide distribution across the Nile and Congo systems reflects its tolerance for a broad range of water conditions.

In the aquarium it is an ideal starting point for aquarists new to the genus, adapting readily to commercial sinking foods, tolerating moderate water chemistry fluctuations and generally integrating without incident into large African community tanks. It is primarily nocturnal but becomes bolder over time in well-structured setups.

Given its potential to reach 40 cm and live for 25 years, it is a serious long-term commitment and requires a large aquarium from the outset.
