Congochromis dimidiatus

Congochromis dimidiatus is one of the most visually distinctive small cichlids from Central Africa. The body is divided almost precisely in half — the anterior portion is silvery-cream to pale gold, and the posterior portion is dark brown to near-black — creating a bicoloured pattern that is immediately recognisable and makes the fish stand out in any planted aquarium.

The species is a cave-spawner found in Congo River basin habitats, and displays typical Congochromis behaviour: pair bonding, cave selection, spawning on a solid surface within the cavity, and biparental brood care. It is peaceful relative to its size and can be kept in well-planted community aquariums with small, non-competitive tankmates.

Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) is recommended, with plenty of plant cover, leaf litter, and cave hides to provide the seclusion this species prefers. A 60 L aquarium suits a single breeding pair comfortably.
