Congochromis squamiceps

Congochromis squamiceps is distinguished from other Congochromis species by the presence of small scales extending onto the operculum (gill cover), a diagnostic character reflected in its specific name. It is found in forested stream habitats in the Congo basin and is a slender, attractively patterned cichlid with soft metallic tones and fine lateral spotting.

Behaviour closely follows other Congochromis species: the pair forms a bond, selects a cave, and spawns on the interior surface. Both parents participate in brood care. The relatively small territory radius makes this species compatible with peaceful, non-competitive tankmates in a well-planted aquarium.

Soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) is ideal. An aquarium of 60 L or more with multiple small caves, leaf litter, and dense planting provides the conditions under which this attractive but understated cichlid displays its best behaviour and colouration.
