Contraband Tetra

Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia comes from the Tapajós River drainage of Pará state in Brazil and is one of the most visually distinctive members of its genus. The flanks carry a subtle but unmistakable cyan-blue tint, and a bold dark band runs through the caudal peduncle into the tail, creating a striking bicolour rear-body effect.

This fish is rarely imported and commands collector interest due to its combination of unusual colouration and genuine rarity in the trade. It requires soft, acidic, warm water and benefits from a dedicated blackwater biotope setup. Groups of ten or more allow natural schooling behaviour to develop fully.

Feeding with quality micro-foods and supplemental live or frozen invertebrates keeps this species in optimal condition. Its care requirements are manageable for an intermediate aquarist willing to maintain precise water parameters.
