Copadichromis borleyi Red Kadango is one of the most popular and visually spectacular large haplochromines from Lake Malawi. Males display a brilliant red-orange to carmine body with a contrasting electric-blue head and dorsal fin — a combination that makes this fish an instant eye-catcher and a perennial favourite among Malawi enthusiasts. The 'Red Kadango' name refers to the Kadango collection locality where the most intensely coloured specimens are found.
In nature, Copadichromis borleyi is an open-water plankton feeder that aggregates in large shoals over sandy areas near rocky drop-offs. Males hold spawning territories on sandy substrate where they display to females passing overhead. Females and non-dominant males are a drab silver-brown.
In the aquarium, the Red Kadango is a moderately peaceful large hap that thrives in a spacious tank. Its open-water lifestyle means it appreciates plenty of swimming space alongside rocky structures. Males colour up to full intensity over 18-24 months, eventually becoming one of the most vivid freshwater fish in the hobby. High-quality astaxanthin-enriched foods maintain the signature red-orange body colouration.
