Copadichromis trimaculatus

Copadichromis trimaculatus, the Three-spot Hap, is named for the distinctive triple-dot marking pattern retained on the body. Dominant males develop a vivid blue base coloration while the three spots — located at the shoulder, mid-flank, and caudal peduncle — become more or less visible against the blue depending on mood and breeding condition, creating a dynamic and variable appearance.

This species is a mid-water plankton feeder that forms schools in the open water of Lake Malawi. In the aquarium it is peaceful, active, and benefits from being kept in a group of three or more. It occupies the upper to mid water column and pairs beautifully with bottom-oriented Peacocks and sand-sifters in a large mixed Malawi community.

Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are silver with faint three-spot markings. An accessible, easy-to-keep species recommended for keepers entering the utaka component of the Malawi hobby.
