Coral Red Pencil-stripe Tetra

Hyphessobrycon epicharis originates from the Venezuelan and Colombian portions of the Orinoco basin. It is distinguished by a bold coral-red stripe running from the operculum to the caudal base, combined with a prominently extended dorsal fin in mature males that gives the fish an almost regal bearing in the aquarium.

This species performs best in soft, acidic water with low to moderate flow and a well-planted environment. A dark substrate and the presence of tannins from driftwood or botanicals help draw out the full intensity of its coral-red lateral stripe. Groups of eight or more school attractively and males display regularly.

Feeding with quality micro-pellets and regular supplements of frozen invertebrates such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia maintains peak health and colouration. This is a rewarding intermediate species.
