Crenicichla pydanielae

Crenicichla pydanielae is a slender-bodied pike cichlid endemic to the Rio Teles Pires system in Mato Grosso, Brazil — a river system that harbours a remarkable diversity of endemic cichlid species. C. pydanielae belongs to the 'lugubris' species group and displays a distinctive combination of a prominent lateral stripe and irregular spotting across the flanks.

Like other Crenicichla of similar size, this species is a dedicated ambush predator that spends much of its time motionless near the substrate or among roots and woody debris, waiting to strike at prey. In the aquarium it settles well once established but requires live or high-quality frozen foods initially.

C. pydanielae is uncommonly available and appeals to specialist collectors of Crenicichla species. Females are typically more colourful than males in the lugubris group, displaying brighter ventral colouration during the breeding season.
