Crenicichla regani

Crenicichla regani is a medium-sized pike cichlid from the Araguaia and Tocantins river systems of central Brazil. It belongs to the 'regani' species group of dwarf and semi-dwarf pike cichlids and is distinguished by bold dark spotting arranged across the flanks and a vivid blue-green iridescent sheen visible in good lighting on well-conditioned specimens.

Compared to larger Crenicichla species, C. regani is relatively manageable for the intermediate aquarist — it does not reach extreme sizes, tolerates a moderate range of water conditions, and can coexist with sufficiently large tank mates. Males are considerably larger than females, and females display more vivid ventral colouration during the breeding season.

This is one of the more accessible and attractive pike cichlids for aquarists who want to keep the group but lack the space or experience for larger species. Regular water changes and high-quality meaty foods are the key to success with this species.
