Cryptocoryne wendtii Red is the most colorful of the common wendtii varieties, producing wavy, lance-shaped leaves that range from reddish-bronze to deep burgundy-brown depending on lighting intensity and nutrient availability. The reddish coloration develops most richly under moderate to moderately bright light with adequate iron and micronutrient availability. In low light conditions, the leaves tend toward greenish-brown, though the reddish tint remains present. Like its brown and green counterparts, this variety originates from Sri Lanka and shares the same robust, adaptable growth habit. It forms compact rosettes that spread gradually via runners, creating natural-looking groupings suitable for foreground to midground planting. The warm, reddish tones of this crypt make it a popular choice for aquascape layouts that use color contrast as a design element, pairing beautifully with bright green mosses, lime-green stem plants, and pale sand substrate. Its demands are minimal — it is fully capable of thriving in low-tech tanks without CO2 injection — making the dramatic leaf color available even to beginners. Root feeding via tabs beneath the rhizome is the most effective method for sustaining the rich coloration over time. Like all Cryptocorynes, it may exhibit crypt melt when moved to a new environment, but recovers reliably from the rhizome within a few weeks. Once established, it is among the most durable and long-lived aquarium plants available.
