Cryptoheros chetumalensis

Cryptoheros chetumalensis is named after Chetumal Bay in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where it inhabits coastal river systems that are strongly influenced by marine water. This makes it one of the most halotolerant Cryptoheros species — it can tolerate low-level brackish conditions that would be harmful to most freshwater cichlids.

The species displays a pattern of dark lateral bands on a grey-olive body, with adults developing blue iridescence on the scales between the bands. It is a relatively small but robustly built cichlid that is more adaptable to harder water conditions than most of its congeners. This makes it an interesting choice for hobbyists in regions with naturally hard tap water who want a Central American cave brooder.

Care is similar to other Cryptoheros species — provide caves, moderate-quality food, and appropriate water parameters. The unique tolerance for slightly elevated salinity can be exploited as a health-management tool for this species.
