Cryptoheros cutteri

Cryptoheros cutteri inhabits rivers draining the Atlantic slopes of Honduras and Belize, where it lives in clear to moderately turbid waters over sandy and rocky substrates. It is one of the more commonly encountered Cryptoheros species in the hobby due to its hardiness, ease of breeding, and attractive banded pattern.

Adults display a series of five to seven dark vertical bars on an olive-green to golden background, with males developing more colorful fin patterning. Unlike some congeners, C. cutteri is relatively tolerant of a range of water chemistry and temperature, making it a flexible choice for aquarists in various geographic regions.

The species is easy to breed, laying clutches in caves or behind rocks. Parental care is well-developed and both parents actively guard the fry for several weeks. Its hardiness and manageability make it an ideal species for hobbyists exploring Central American cichlids for the first time.
