Cryptoheros sajica

Cryptoheros sajica is endemic to the Atlantic drainage of Costa Rica and is among the most popular small Central American cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Its common name refers to the characteristic T-shaped marking formed by the intersection of the horizontal lateral stripe and a vertical bar — a distinctive pattern that makes identification straightforward. Males develop reddish-orange margins on the dorsal fin and a more intense body coloration than females.

This species is a dedicated cave brooder and will readily spawn in suitably sized hiding spots. Unlike many CA cichlids, its aggression level remains relatively manageable outside of spawning periods, making it compatible with robust community fish in a properly structured aquarium.

C. sajica thrives in soft to moderately hard water with good oxygenation — conditions that reflect its natural Costa Rican river habitat. It is an excellent choice for hobbyists wanting a Central American cichlid that is manageable in terms of size and aggression.
