Cryptoheros septemfasciatus

Cryptoheros septemfasciatus inhabits Atlantic slope rivers of Costa Rica and Panama and is named for the seven distinct dark vertical bars that cross its body. Adults develop attractive blue iridescence on the scales between the bars, creating a striking contrast in well-lit aquaria. Males are larger and more colorful, with elongated dorsal and anal fin tips.

This is a small, secretive cave brooder that integrates well into suitably designed aquaria. It is notably less aggressive than many Central American cichlids and can cohabit peacefully with other robust community species of similar size outside of the breeding season.

The species tolerates a range of water conditions but performs best in soft to medium-hard water with good filtration and regular partial water changes. It is hardy enough to be recommended for cichlid beginners who want a species with more character than most community fish.
