Cuban Crayfish

Procambarus cubensis is endemic to Cuba and represents one of the relatively few Procambarus species outside the continental United States. It inhabits warm, slow-moving freshwater habitats including swamps, rivers, and agricultural ditches, where it feeds opportunistically on plant matter, detritus, and invertebrates.

In the aquarium, P. cubensis does best at higher temperatures than many North American crayfish, making it compatible with tropical freshwater setups. It is a hardy digger and will rearrange the aquarium landscape, so robust anchored decorations are recommended. Its relatively plain olive colouration is offset by an energetic and curious personality.

This species is best kept as a specimen in a dedicated crayfish tank or with fish species that inhabit the upper water column and are large enough to avoid predation.
