Cyathochromis obliquidens

Cyathochromis obliquidens is a distinctive mbuna from Lake Malawi recognised by its relatively slender body profile and attractive oblique scale patterning that gives a chevron-like appearance. Males display blue to blue-green iridescence with dark-edged scales forming diagonal lines across the flanks. Females are cryptically coloured in brown-grey.

Uniquely among mbuna, Cyathochromis obliquidens uses a specialised feeding strategy — it nips trailing algae and plant matter rather than scraping rocks, making it somewhat more versatile in its feeding but still primarily herbivorous. The species is moderately territorial but less aggressive than most mbuna, making it a better candidate for mixed community setups. Maternal mouthbrooding females incubate eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. Hard, alkaline water is still required as with all Malawi cichlids.
