Cynotilapia axelrodi

Cynotilapia axelrodi is a moderately sized mbuna from Lake Malawi distinguished from the common C. afra by its more slender profile and slightly different colouration. Males display a blue-grey base with faint vertical barring and vibrant blue finnage. The species occupies intermediate rocky habitat and is notably more of a midwater swimmer than many mbuna, often observed in open water above the rocks.

Like its congener C. afra, Cynotilapia axelrodi possesses unicuspid teeth and supplements an algae diet with zooplankton. It is somewhat less aggressive than Metriaclima but still territorial enough to require careful tank management. A 1M:3–4F harem in a 200+ L tank with ample rockwork gives the best results. Females mouthbrood for 21–28 days. This species is less commonly available than C. afra, making it a valued find for serious Malawi collectors.
