Cynotilapia sp. 'Mbamba Bay'

Cynotilapia sp. 'Mbamba Bay' is a locale form or undescribed Cynotilapia species from Mbamba Bay on the Tanzanian northeastern shore of Lake Malawi. Males exhibit particularly vivid electric-blue colouration with crisp dark vertical barring; the Mbamba Bay location is known in the hobby for producing some of the most intensely coloured Cynotilapia specimens available.

Like all Cynotilapia, this species has unicuspid teeth enabling zooplankton consumption alongside algae grazing, giving it a broader dietary niche than typical mbuna. It tends to swim at mid-depth in the water column rather than strictly hugging the rocky substrate. Management as a 1M:3–4F harem in a well-decorated tank with both open water and rocky retreats suits this species well. Female mouthbrooding lasts approximately 21–28 days. A cornerstone of quality Malawi cichlid collections.
