Cyperus prolifer Dwarf Papyrus

Cyperus prolifer is a compact South African species that produces the characteristic papyrus brush-head on a much smaller, finer scale than C. papyrus, making it one of the most popular marginal plants for container water gardens, nano paludariums, and indoor water features where full-sized papyrus would be overwhelming. Its stems reach 30–80 cm and bear attractive, thread-fine, pendant rays at the apex.

In cultivation it is vigorous and easy, thriving in shallow water or wet substrate in warm conditions with good light. It naturalises freely in warm outdoor pond settings in subtropical and tropical climates. In temperate regions it should be kept above 15 °C and brought indoors for winter or treated as an annual.

For the aquarist designing a paludarium or open-top aquarium with a visible emergent zone, C. prolifer provides a perfect sense of tropical wild-edge habitat at a scale that does not overwhelm the overall composition.
