Cyphotilapia gibberosa 'Kigoma Blue'

Cyphotilapia gibberosa 'Kigoma Blue' represents the larger, more heavily built sister species to C. frontosa. Specimens from the Kigoma region in western Tanzania are particularly prized for the depth and richness of their blue colouration and the impressive size of the male nuchal hump which can become truly massive in aged individuals.

C. gibberosa grows larger than C. frontosa, with males regularly reaching 35–38 cm and requiring correspondingly larger aquariums. The species is less commonly available than frontosa but has a dedicated following among large-cichlid specialists who value its imposing presence and long lifespan.

Husbandry is similar to C. frontosa with an emphasis on slightly larger tank dimensions and a deeper substrate for the species' digging behaviour. Blue colour intensity is enhanced by high water quality, moderate protein diet, and stable alkaline chemistry.
