Danio flagrans

Danio flagrans, the Flaming Danio, is a striking species from the rivers of Myanmar that earns its common name from the vivid orange-red colouration of its fins against a blue-silver body. In well-conditioned individuals — particularly dominant males — the fin colouration intensifies to an almost flame-like brilliance, making it one of the most visually impactful small danio species in the hobby.

In the aquarium it is a lively, active schooling fish that does best in a group of eight or more. It appreciates well-planted tanks with open midwater swimming space, good oxygenation, and clean water. Its care requirements are no more demanding than those of the Glowlight Danio or similar Myanmar species, and it is accessible to fishkeepers of beginner level upward.

Danio flagrans is not widely available in the mainstream trade but is increasingly offered by specialist importers and danio-focused breeders. For enthusiasts who appreciate the remarkable diversity of the genus, it is a highly rewarding and beautiful species that stands out even in a tank containing other colourful cyprinids.
