Dark-nape Apistogramma

Apistogramma eremnopyge is one of those species that serious Apistogramma collectors dream of keeping — rarely available, demanding in its requirements, and strikingly beautiful when conditions are right. Its scientific name references the dark coloration of the nape and posterior head region, a feature that immediately sets it apart from similar species.

Native to remote areas of the Peruvian Amazon, A. eremnopyge is found in shallow, highly acidic blackwater streams with very low conductivity. Males are larger and more colorful, with red-orange fin margins and iridescent scale rows that become brilliant in aged, well-conditioned blackwater.

Keeping this species successfully requires significant experience with soft, acidic water management. Reverse osmosis water remineralized to very low TDS is strongly recommended, combined with leaf litter, alder cones, and peat filtration.
