Dark-Spotted Spiny Eel

This dark-spotted domestic form of Macrognathus aral is distinguished by its more intensely pigmented irregular dark spots covering the dorsal surface and flanks. The enhanced spot intensity gives it a bolder visual character compared to the standard species, appealing to keepers who prefer a more dramatically marked small spiny eel without the higher care demands of larger species.

As with all forms of M. aral, this is among the most adaptable and forgiving of the spiny eels, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and feeding eagerly on live and frozen meaty foods from the moment of introduction. Its hardiness makes it an excellent first spiny eel and a reliable choice for community aquariums with medium-sized tankmates.

Bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms, and sinking pellets are all accepted without hesitation. A fine sandy substrate, basic hiding spots, and a sealed lid are the essential requirements. Multiple individuals can often be kept together in larger tanks without significant conflict, which is unusual among spiny eels.
