Desmotes Leporinus

Leporinus desmotes is an uncommonly available Leporinus from the Orinoco and Amazon drainages, distinguished by a bold high-contrast pattern of dark and pale banding that gives it an almost monochromatic graphic appearance compared to the yellow-banded relatives. This striking coloration makes it a desirable acquisition for large-tank South American enthusiasts.

In the aquarium it shares the same active, exploratory nature of the genus and will destroy soft-leaved plants. Strong water movement, excellent filtration, and a secure lid are non-negotiable. Like other Leporinus, it can be kept in groups where there is sufficient space to reduce intraspecific tension, or housed singly in a mixed-species display.

Diet is predominantly plant-based with protein supplementation: herbivore pellets, algae wafers, spirulina flake, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen protein foods. Regular water changes and meticulous maintenance support long-term health.
