Distichodus Affinis

Distichodus affinis is a mid-sized Distichodus from the lower Congo River and its tributaries, presenting a sleek, compressed silver body with faint vertical banding visible particularly in juveniles. It is smaller and less boisterous than the popular D. sexfasciatus, making it a more manageable choice for home aquarists.

Like all Distichodus species, D. affinis has a primarily herbivorous diet and will graze on aquatic plants in the aquarium. Robust Java fern, Anubias species, or artificial plants are recommended for planting, as softer-leaved species will be consumed. The species appreciates moderate water flow and clean, well-oxygenated conditions.

Distichodus affinis can be kept in groups, which reduces inter-individual aggression and promotes natural behaviour. It mixes well with larger African tetras, robust catfish, and medium cichlids. Long-lived in suitable conditions, this is a rewarding species for a dedicated African river biotope.
