Distichodus Notospilus

Distichodus notospilus is one of the more colourful members of its genus, notable for its vivid orange-red dorsal and caudal fins that contrast sharply against the otherwise silver body. This colouration intensifies on well-conditioned adults in appropriate water chemistry and can be quite dramatic under good aquarium lighting.

This species inhabits the faster-flowing sections of the Congo River and appreciates moderate to strong current, excellent filtration, and high water quality in captivity. As it grows to around 20 cm it requires a larger tank, and its herbivorous habits mean that soft-leaved plants will not survive in the same aquarium. Durable plants such as Anubias or Java fern attached to wood, or artificial alternatives, are best.

Distichodus notospilus is peaceful with similarly sized or larger tank mates. It can be kept in small groups, which reduces territorial skirmishes. A dedicated large African biotope with strong flow and robust décor suits it best.
