Djaneae Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla djaneae is a recently described pike cichlid from the Rio Madeira drainage in western Brazil, one of several species elevated to full species status following molecular phylogenetic studies of the genus in the 2010s. It is a slender, elegantly proportioned fish, reaching about 20 cm, with fine dark spotting along the upper flanks and a subtle iridescent greenish sheen visible under directional lighting.

As a Rio Madeira species, C. djaneae inhabits clear to lightly tannin-stained waters with sandy and rocky substrates. The aquarium should replicate these conditions — soft, slightly acidic water, fine white sand, driftwood, and a moderate level of water movement. The species is relatively cryptic in behaviour, spending much time concealed among submerged wood.

Due to limited export from the Rio Madeira region, C. djaneae remains a rarity in the hobby. Aquarists lucky enough to obtain specimens should treat them as a breeding project — the species has been propagated in captivity and responds to standard Crenicichla conditioning and cave-spawning protocols.
