Dracula simia (Monkey Face Orchid)

Dracula simia is one of the most famous orchids in the world, celebrated for its pendant flowers whose arrangement of petals, sepals, and lip creates a startlingly convincing monkey face complete with large eyes and a fluffy beard. Native to the cloud forests of Ecuador and Peru at elevations of 1,000–2,000 m, it is a cool-growing specialist that demands temperatures rarely exceeding 18 °C and near-saturated humidity throughout the year. The flower spikes hang downward from the base of the plant, requiring an open-bottomed mount or basket to allow them to emerge freely.

Cultivating Dracula simia in a paludarium is an advanced endeavour requiring dedicated temperature control — typically a Peltier-cooled enclosure or a purpose-built cool zone within the build. However, for those who achieve the right conditions, it is one of the most rewarding plants in the hobby, producing its remarkable flowers repeatedly from mature plants.
