Dwarf Barb

One of the smallest members of the genus Pethia, Pethia gelius is native to slow-flowing, vegetated streams and floodplain ponds across the Gangetic plain and Bangladesh. Barely reaching 4 cm, it is a nano barb well suited to smaller aquariums. The body is pale yellowish-silver with scattered dark spots of variable size and intensity, and there is a pleasing golden iridescence to the scales when the fish is well-fed and in good condition.

In the aquarium, Pethia gelius thrives in soft, warm to room-temperature water with gentle filtration and dense planting. It is entirely peaceful — even timid — and should be kept in groups of eight or more to provide confidence. Companions must be carefully chosen: larger, boisterous fish will easily outcompete it for food or stress it.

Feeding requires attention to food size: micro-pellets, crushed flake, daphnia, and micro-worms are all ideal. The Dwarf Barb is an engaging, active little fish that more than compensates for its modest size with constant movement and an endearing social dynamic.
