Dwarf Peacock Eel

This dwarf trade form of Macrognathus siamensis is the smallest commonly available spiny eel, reaching a maximum of around 15 cm and making it genuinely suitable for aquariums as small as 40 litres — remarkable for the family. It retains the characteristic row of dorsal ocelli that defines the peacock eel group and is just as engaging in behaviour despite its diminutive size.

In the aquarium it requires fine sand substrate, hiding spots among plants or small caves, and a lid that is fully sealed. Its tiny size makes escape through micro-gaps a real risk, so careful attention to lid fitting is important. Despite being smaller than standard peacock eels, it is still a dedicated burrower and will excavate shallow depressions in fine sand.

Micro-worm, baby brine shrimp, frozen bloodworm chopped fine, and small tubifex are all suitable foods. With patient conditioning, quality micro-pellets may be accepted. It is thoroughly peaceful and can be kept with nano and small community fish of appropriate temperament, making it one of the most community-friendly spiny eels available.
