Dwarf Whiptail Catfish

Rineloricaria parva is one of the smallest members of its genus, native to the Paraguay and Uruguay river systems in Paraguay and Uruguay respectively. Its compact size makes it a genuinely practical choice for smaller aquariums where the larger Sturisoma and Farlowella would be impractical. Despite its small size, it retains all the characteristic features of the genus — a flattened, armoured body with a pointed tail and cryptic brown patterning.

In the aquarium, Rineloricaria parva is among the most undemanding loricariid whiptails available. It adapts to a wide range of water conditions, accepts most vegetable-based sinking foods, and will spawn readily in hollow tubes or under flat stones once a pair is established. Its small size and peaceful nature make it compatible with nano fish, shrimp, and small tetras.

This species is excellent for hobbyists who want to experience loricariid breeding without committing to a large aquarium. The male guards eggs deposited in a chosen shelter and fans them until hatching, which occurs in approximately 7–10 days.
