Echinodorus 'Indian Red'

Echinodorus 'Indian Red' is a large-growing red cultivar bearing broad, oval-to-lance-shaped leaves in a deep, saturated red that is maintained across both young and mature foliage under adequate lighting and iron. It is one of the more vigorous red sword cultivars, capable of reaching 30–50 cm in well-nourished conditions, placing it firmly in the background tier for most planted aquariums.

The intensity and uniformity of the red colouration distinguishes 'Indian Red' from many other red sword cultivars where only new leaves show vivid colour. With consistent iron supplementation and medium-to-bright lighting, the entire rosette maintains its rich red hue, creating a dominant colour statement in the rear of the aquascape. CO2 injection is beneficial for sustaining this growth rate and colour quality simultaneously.

The cultivar pairs effectively with bright green background plants such as Vallisneria or Ceratophyllum, where the contrast between red and green is maximised. It also works well in South American biotope setups alongside red-finned fish such as discus or cardinal tetras.
