Echinodorus latifolius

Echinodorus latifolius is a compact South American chain sword distinguished from its narrow-leaved relatives by its noticeably wider, oval-to-elliptic leaves that give the plant a fuller, more substantial appearance at low heights of 10–20 cm. It spreads through horizontal runners at a moderate pace, producing a structured, lush foreground carpet over time. Its broader leaf shape creates a different textural effect to E. tenellus or E. bolivianus, making it a valuable alternative for aquarists seeking foreground variety.

The plant is undemanding and tolerates a wide range of water parameters, performing reliably in both soft and moderately hard water. It does not require CO2 injection and adapts well to low-to-medium lighting, though stronger light keeps it more compact. Regular root feeding ensures healthy, vivid leaf colour.

E. latifolius is an excellent foreground plant for both beginner and experienced aquarists, particularly well suited to Amazonian biotope aquariums where its natural South American origin is authentic.
