Echinodorus longiscapus

Echinodorus longiscapus is a large-growing Brazilian species that lives up to its name — longiscapus referring to its remarkably long inflorescence (flower stalk), which can project well above the waterline carrying numerous daughter plantlets. The submerged leaves are lance-shaped, moderately broad, and bright to mid-green, forming a tall, upright rosette that can reach 35–60 cm in well-nourished tanks.

Its growth habit is vigorous and upright, making it a natural background plant for large planted aquariums. The leaves are held firmly on medium-length petioles that keep the rosette compact laterally while gaining considerable height. Like other large Echinodorus, it is a root feeder that needs quality substrate nutrition to support its tall stature.

E. longiscapus is less commonly available than E. bleheri but offers a similar visual effect with the added spectacle of its distinctive tall flower stalk — an impressive sight in aquariums tall enough to accommodate it.
