Echinodorus macrophyllus

Echinodorus macrophyllus is a large-leaved Brazilian species that produces some of the broadest, most impressive leaves in the genus. Its cordate leaves are held on stout, firm petioles and can reach 15–20 cm wide in mature specimens, with the overall rosette attaining heights of 40–70 cm. The foliage is a deep, rich green with clearly defined venation, and the sheer scale of the leaves creates an impact unlike most other aquarium plants.

Due to its size, E. macrophyllus is only suitable for large display aquariums of 200 litres or more, where it can be used as a solitary background or centrepiece specimen. It is a heavy root feeder and requires consistent fertilisation to fuel its large leaf production. Under strong lighting it grows vigorously; in lower light it slows considerably but remains healthy if well fed.

This species is rarely seen in mainstream aquarium retail but is highly prized among Echinodorus collectors and large-tank enthusiasts for its scale and dramatic tropical presence.
