Echinodorus palaefolius

Echinodorus palaefolius is native to Mexico and Central America, where it grows in the shallows and margins of tropical rivers and marshes. It produces broad, somewhat rounded to ovate leaves on long, sturdy petioles, forming an imposing rosette that can reach 30–50 cm in well-maintained aquariums. The foliage is a rich, deep green with clear venation, giving the plant an attractive, classic sword-plant appearance.

It is a heavy root feeder that responds strongly to regular nutrient supplementation, producing noticeably larger and more vigorous leaves when provided with quality substrate or root tabs. As a warm-water species it performs best at temperatures above 24°C and is less cold-tolerant than some South American counterparts.

Though less frequently stocked than E. bleheri, E. palaefolius is an excellent background plant that holds its own in large community and Central American biotope aquariums, particularly alongside cichlids of similar origin.
