Echinodorus 'Snowball' is a rare albino or strongly chlorophyll-deficient cultivar producing leaves in a clean cream-white to pale ivory colouration with almost no green pigmentation. The leaves have a soft, luminous quality under aquarium lighting — particularly under warm-spectrum LEDs or T5HO tubes — that creates an otherworldly focal point in the midground. Plants remain compact, typically 15–25 cm, and grow slowly relative to green sword cultivars.
As an albino cultivar, 'Snowball' requires more careful husbandry than standard Echinodorus. Reduced chlorophyll means reduced photosynthetic efficiency, so CO2 supplementation and comprehensive fertilisation are important to support growth. Too little light causes it to deteriorate; too much direct intense light can cause bleaching of the already pale leaves. Finding the right balance is part of the challenge.
The Snowball Sword is a niche collector's plant not commonly found in mainstream retail. Its rarity, slow growth, and unusual appearance make it one of the most talked-about Echinodorus among planted aquarium enthusiasts, and a single specimen can transform the focal balance of an aquascape.
