Echinodorus subalatus

Echinodorus subalatus is a medium-to-large South American species occupying wetland and river-margin habitats across a broad range from Venezuela to southern Brazil. Its lance-shaped leaves have finely toothed or serrated margins that are visible on close inspection, giving the plant a slightly fringed appearance compared to smooth-leaved relatives. The foliage is mid-green with clear venation, forming a tidy rosette of 25–45 cm in healthy aquarium conditions.

It is an adaptable species tolerant of a broad range of water parameters, including both soft and moderately hard water. As with most large Echinodorus, it is a root feeder that performs best with substrate nutrient supplementation. Growth is moderate and reliable, and it is not prone to the leaf melt or sudden deterioration that sometimes affects more sensitive Alismataceae.

E. subalatus fills a useful niche as a background plant in medium and large community aquariums, providing solid green structure without dominating the layout the way the largest sword species can.
