Echinodorus tomentosus

Echinodorus tomentosus is a moderately sized South American species notable for the fine, hair-like trichomes covering its leaf surfaces — a feature implied by the species name tomentosus, meaning densely hairy. These hairs give the leaves a soft, velvety feel and a slightly muted surface appearance that sets the plant apart visually from all other Echinodorus. In the aquarium it typically reaches 20–40 cm, forming a rosette suited to midground-to-background use in medium-sized tanks.

Despite its unusual surface morphology, E. tomentosus is not notably more demanding than other mid-sized Echinodorus. It adapts to a range of tropical water parameters and light levels, though it performs best with moderate lighting and consistent root nutrition. Growth is moderate and the plant remains manageable in tanks of 80 litres and above.

Collectors and aquatic plant enthusiasts appreciate E. tomentosus for its textural novelty — it is one of the few aquarium plants where the tactile quality of the foliage is as interesting as its visual appearance, making it a rewarding species to grow and observe up close.
