Echinodorus trifolius

Echinodorus trifolius is an uncommon South American species found in shallow wetlands and stream margins, producing a rosette of narrow leaves that emerge in clusters of three — the characteristic that gives the species its name. In the aquarium it typically reaches 15–30 cm, forming a compact, fine-textured midground plant with a decidedly different appearance from the broad-leaved Amazon Sword types. The foliage is a bright, clear green and the overall silhouette is light and delicate.

Its moderate difficulty rating reflects not demanding water chemistry requirements but rather the relative scarcity of the species in the hobby and the need for careful placement to allow it to establish properly. It performs best in soft to moderately hard tropical water with consistent but not excessive fertilisation, and does not require CO2 injection.

E. trifolius is most likely to be found among specialist aquatic plant retailers and collectors. Its rarity and distinctive leaf arrangement make it a rewarding addition to planted tanks where botanical diversity is valued alongside visual impact.
