Echinodorus 'Tropica'

Echinodorus 'Tropica' is a cultivar developed by the Danish aquatic plant nursery Tropica in the 1970s, representing one of the earliest ornamental Echinodorus hybrids to gain widespread hobby distribution. It bears broad, oval, mid-green leaves with conspicuous reddish-brown spotting and blotching that is denser and slightly darker than that of the Ozelot cultivar. Mature plants reach 25–40 cm, placing it in a comfortable midground position for most planted tanks.

The 'Tropica' cultivar has proven exceptionally durable and adaptable over five decades of hobby use, performing reliably across a wide range of water chemistry and lighting conditions without CO2 injection. Spot intensity is maintained with regular iron supplementation and medium light; the spots become less defined in very low light or iron-deficient water.

As the originator of the spotted-sword aesthetic that later inspired the Ozelot and related cultivars, 'Tropica' holds historical significance in the planted aquarium hobby and remains a high-quality, proven choice for aquarists seeking patterned foliage with minimal effort.
