Electric Blue Jack Dempsey

The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey is a captive-developed color mutation that arose from the normal Jack Dempsey. The mutation causes an extraordinary intensification and uniform distribution of the blue iridescent pigment across virtually the entire body and fins, creating an effect that is among the most striking of any freshwater cichlid in the hobby. The dark background coloration of the normal form is largely replaced by vivid, almost luminescent blue.

This morph is associated with reduced growth rate and slightly reduced hardiness compared to the wild-type Jack Dempsey, and it typically reaches a smaller adult size of around 15–20 cm. The reduced aggression often observed may be linked to the same genetic factors producing the color change. This makes the Electric Blue JD more suitable for community setups with other robust medium-sized fish.

Care broadly follows the standard Jack Dempsey protocol, but the Electric Blue morph is somewhat more sensitive to water quality deterioration and requires more careful attention to temperature stability and dissolved oxygen levels.
