The Electric Blue Ram is a carefully developed colour morph of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, selectively bred to maximise the blue iridescence naturally present across the flanks and body of the standard German Blue Ram. In high-quality specimens, the blue colouration extends across nearly the entire body surface, creating an almost metallic sheen that is extraordinary for a fish of this size. The characteristic black eye stripe, dorsal spot, and body markings are retained, adding depth and contrast to the overall appearance.
Despite its dramatic colour, the Electric Blue Ram shares all the husbandry requirements of the standard German Blue Ram. It originates from the same Orinoco basin bloodlines and requires the same warm, soft, slightly acidic conditions. The selective breeding process has, in some lines, resulted in slightly reduced hardiness compared to wild-type animals, making good water quality and appropriate temperature all the more critical.
In the aquarium, the Electric Blue Ram is a peaceful, fascinating dwarf cichlid. It is suitable for soft-water community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. Its electric blue coloration is most vivid in stable, high-quality water with temperatures maintained at the upper end of its comfortable range. Like all rams, it forms monogamous pairs and exhibits engaging parental behaviour during breeding.
