Elongate Stone Loach

Nemacheilus evezardi is a graceful, elongated stone loach from the rivers of peninsular India, found in clear, fast-flowing hill streams over smooth rock and gravel substrates. Its body is beautifully camouflaged with a complex mottled pattern of dark brown and cream that mimics the stream-bottom pebbles among which it lives. The species was long grouped with European Barbatula stone loaches before genetic revision placed it firmly within Nemacheilus.

In the aquarium this species requires clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow, fine-to-medium substrate, and hiding places among smooth stones and rock crevices. It is an active, diurnal fish that forages openly in well-maintained conditions. Groups of five or more are recommended; individual fish may be timid but group dynamics encourage bolder behaviour.

Feeding consists of frozen bloodworm, micro pellets, daphnia, and live invertebrates. The Elongate Stone Loach is a superb choice for a South Indian hill-stream biotope alongside smaller danio and barb species that share its native habitat.
