Enantiopus melanogenys

Enantiopus melanogenys is one of the most visually dramatic sand cichlids of Lake Tanganyika. Breeding males transform into extraordinary displays of colour — electric blue on the head and upper body, vivid yellow on the flanks — with pelvic fins elongated into flowing streamers. Males simultaneously excavate large sand craters used as display and spawning arenas.

This species is a female mouthbrooder, with females incubating the clutch alone after spawning at the male's crater site. Groups of several females per male optimise natural breeding dynamics. E. melanogenys is found over extensive open sandy flats at moderate depths.
