Erect Moss

Erect Moss (Vesicularia reticulata) is an unusual member of the Vesicularia genus in that it grows predominantly upright rather than draping or spreading laterally. The stems are relatively firm and erect, giving the moss a structured, brushy appearance that contrasts strikingly with the cascading habit of its more common relatives such as Weeping Moss. The individual leaves have a faintly net-like (reticulate) surface texture that gives the species its name.

V. reticulata is native to India and parts of Southeast Asia, where it grows attached to rocks and wood in moderately flowing streams. In the aquarium it performs well in a wide range of water conditions, tolerating moderate hardness and pH above neutral. It is less demanding about temperature than some mosses, growing reliably between 18 and 28°C.

In aquascaping layouts, Erect Moss provides a valuable upright accent when used on vertical hardscape faces or growing up from the base of driftwood. Combining it with a drooping moss such as Weeping Moss on the same structure creates a striking compositional dialogue between upward and downward growing forms.
