Eriocaulon setaceum Bristle Pipewort

Eriocaulon setaceum is one of the most widely distributed pipewort species, found across tropical Asia, Africa, and Australia in shallow, soft-water habitats. It forms compact rosettes of extremely fine, bristle-like leaves — thinner even than most Eriocaulon species — that radiate outward in a precise, star-shaped arrangement. The overall effect in the aquarium foreground is of an intricate, fine-textured grass that catches light beautifully.

Like all Eriocaulon species, E. setaceum requires very soft, acidic, mineral-poor water and high light for successful aquarium cultivation. CO2 injection is essentially required for sustained growth — without it the plant can persist but grows extremely slowly and rarely looks its best. It is not a plant for the casual hobbyist but rewards committed high-tech planted tank aquarists with an exquisite and unusual foreground texture.

E. setaceum pairs superbly with other fine-textured species like Hemianthus callitrichoides, Micranthemum monte carlo, and other Eriocaulon in an aquascape that prioritises intricate botanical detail.
