Exallodontus Catfish

Exallodontus aguanai is a monotypic genus found in the central Amazon basin and is immediately distinguished from other pimelodids by its notably protruding, almost fang-like dentition — a rare feature in the family. It inhabits fast-flowing river channels and side channels with strong current.

In the aquarium, well-oxygenated water with good flow is essential. The species is an active, predatory fish that should be housed with fish too large to be preyed upon. It adapts to prepared meaty foods but may initially require weaning from live or freshly killed prey.

Exallodontus aguanai is essentially unknown to the general hobby and is a prize for the most dedicated catfish specialists. Very few specimens have been observed in captivity and care notes are largely extrapolated from its ecology.
