Crenicichla notophthalmus is a smaller, more delicately built pike cichlid from the blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro system in Brazil. Its most striking feature is a bold, iridescent-ringed eyespot on the dorsal fin — a characteristic shared with its close relatives in the 'notophthalmus group' — along with a neat lateral body spot. Females in breeding condition develop a vivid red mid-body band and belly.

Being a blackwater species, C. notophthalmus requires soft, warm, acidic water with botanical additions and low mineral content. It is more manageable in size than large Crenicichla, fitting comfortably in medium-large setups, but retains the predatory nature of the genus and will consume smaller fish. It is best kept as a bonded pair.

Captive breeding of C. notophthalmus is well-documented among specialist Crenicichla keepers. Pairs spawn in caves or sheltered areas, and the female guards the eggs and fry with typical pike cichlid intensity. A rewarding species for the blackwater and dwarf-pike enthusiast.
