Fahaka Puffer (Lake Chad Form)

The Lake Chad basin form of Tetraodon lineatus inhabits the Chari-Logone river system and the fluctuating waters of Lake Chad, an environment that has contracted dramatically over recent decades due to climate change and irrigation. This population is exposed to variable salinity, high alkalinity, and fluctuating temperatures as the lake shrinks and refills seasonally, making the Lake Chad form somewhat more tolerant of harder, more alkaline water than Nile or Niger populations. In the aquarium it should still be provided with large, clean conditions but can handle moderate hardness. The care profile remains demanding: enormous space, solitary housing, and regular hard prey for beak maintenance. Conservation concerns surround this population given Lake Chad's critical contraction.
